Choosing the Right Option for You
Traditional IRA – Grow Your Savings Now, Pay Taxes Later
A Traditional IRA can be a great fit if you want to lower your taxable income today. You won’t pay taxes on your contributions or earnings until you begin making withdrawals during retirement.
- Eligibility: You must have earned income to contribute.
- Contribution Limits: up to $7,500 annually or $8,600 if you are aged 50 or older. Contributions must not exceed your earned income amount.
Withdrawals: Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) begin the year you turn 73 years old. Early withdrawals before age 59½ may be subject to penalties.
Roth IRA – Pay Taxes Now, Enjoy Tax-Free Growth Later
With a Roth IRA, you contribute “after-tax” dollars. The big benefit? Your earnings grow tax-free, and you can withdraw your contributions at any time without a penalty.
- Eligibility: Available to those with earned income within IRS-specified income limits.
- Contribution Limits: Contribute up to $7,500 annually or $8,600 if you are aged 50 or older.
Withdrawals: Earnings are tax and penalty-free if the account has been open for 5 years and you are at least 59½ years old. You can still make withdrawals if you don’t meet these requirements, but you may pay taxes and/or penalties.
